There would be month-long promotional series of entertainment and exhibitions at the popular Value shopping destination. Dubai Marina Mall takes part in ‘Everything You Desire This Summer’ promotion

Dubai Marina Mall, the lifestyle, shopping and entertainment heart of New Dubai, is marking ‘Summer in Dubai’ with a spectacular array of entertainment choices, billed to become the most popular attractions for Dubai Marina’s families. Among the highlights of this summer’s retail and entertainment promotion are Theaker Von Zianro, the international street aerialist, and a special shadow puppet show: Swamp Juice.

Von Ziarno, a New Zealand born artist, will perform the aerial show titled ‘Minerva,’ in the ceiling of the Atrium inside the mall. The shows will be held from June 30 to July 9. To compliment the show, fun circus workshops to entertain children will be held July 3 to 9 at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm daily. Two performers will teach children various circus skills including plate spinning, balancing and juggling.

Swamp Juice, a shadow puppet theatre show featuring punk snails, opera-singing mice and neurotic snakes in a swamp, will be held from July 23 to 31. The audience can watch the transformation of various bits of household junk into intricate silhouette characters, creating a true visual feast. Swamp Juice will be showing in a purpose built theatrette exclusive to the mall. Young children might want to bring along a parent to hold on to during the scary bits! Tickets are free but limited, available at the Guest Service Desk.

Puppet making workshops will also be held around the same time and will show children how to make puppets and take part in a puppet show. They will have a variety of colours, shapes, sizes and decorations to choose from to make their puppet unique. The workshops will be held from July 17 to 30 from 6pm to 8pm.

Other highlights at Dubai Marina Mall include a Mr Men Show called Dillydale Dance-A-Thon, a stage show based on the original Mr Men and Little Miss Books created by Roger Hargreaves, to be held until July 3; a Cinnabon event, teaching children how to roll and bake Cinnabons to take home, to be held from July 10 to 16; and a meet & greet with Modhesh on July 17, 18 and 19, in addition to performances and live entertainment by musicians and stilt walkers throughout the promotion.

Dubai shopping centers opening hours extended in July

Shopping centers in Dubai are set to extend their opening hours next month in an efforts to add boost to the emirate's retail industry, according to the Dubai Department of Economic Development.

Shopping centers will open between 10:00 am to 12 midnight 7 days a week while restaurants inside the centers may stay open to 1:00 am at least and even extend for extra hours as needed.

CEO of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment Laila Bint Suhail said the move would help increase sales of retailers and give shoppers more fun time at the centers.

Tourists shopping in London can now receive instant cash VAT refunds

Kanoo, one of the largest independent, family owned group of companies in the Gulf Region and Premier Tax Free, Europe’s major Tax Free Shopping provider, today announced that they have further extended their downtown VAT refund partnership to include the United Kingdom. Available initially from within two Kanoo Foreign Exchange branches located in the Haymarket (near Sofitel London Heathrow) and Knightsbridge areas of London, this new service allows international tourists to receive their VAT refunds in cash with real ease and efficiency.

Thanks to the collaboration between Kanoo Foreign Exchange Services and Premier Tax Free, tourists visiting London can receive an instant VAT refund from one of two city centre branches on the day of purchase prior to going to airport customs.

“Following the successful launch of our expanded VAT refund service within the prestigious Printemps Department Store in Paris earlier this summer, it made perfect sense to extend similar facilities to those visiting London. Until now, most customers have had to obtain their cash refunds at the airport, adding to the time spent there. Kanoo and Premier Tax Free aim to make Tax Free Shopping all that more enjoyable and easy, by offering refunds in cash at city centre locations. It is no secret that during the past three years, the retail industry has tanked, and no part of it more so than luxury. Neither the breezy wooden arcades of Bur Dubai Souq nor the ramshackle shops of Deira's Covered Souq resemble the barasti roofed bazaar that was established on the banks of Dubai Creek in the 1830s, but the city's souqs remain full of character and still have the reputation as the best in Arabia.
Dubai's souqs hold everything imaginable - you'll find Arabian perfume, traditional kandouras (white robes), spices and bellydancing costumes. Most shops specialise in something, but some seem to sell everything, ancient and modern, from pumice stones to traditional wooden tooth cleaners.

Whatever you buy, make sure to bargain, and in between bargaining take time to chat to the sales guys - they hail from everywhere: Mumbai, Islamabad, Isfahan and even Kiev. Accept all offers of tea - the socialising is as much fun as the shopping. Carrefour region's top retailer

Carrefour has been named as the Middle East's top hypermarket operator in the latest ranking of Top 30 Middle Eastern and African retailers from Planet Retail, a UK researcher specialising in global retail trends.
Carrefour, which ranked eighth in the overall Middle East and Africa list, was followed closely by its archrival Casino, the region's ninth biggest player.
Carrefour, a French retailer that is operated by Majid Al Futtai Group in the Middle East, has achieved rapid growth in recent years by continuing to roll out new stores in and beyond its GCC stronghold, targeting countries such as Kuwait and Jordan, while at the also extending its network in Saudi Arabia and UAE, according to Planet Retail.

However, while Casino has a presence in Africa via franchise agreements and also has plans to open about 16 Géant stores in Saudi Arabia via its new franchise partner GSL, it is unlikely to overtake Carrefour.
"If Casino's hypermarkets are to threaten Carrefour's ambitions for dominance in the region, a surge in openings is needed," said Oliver Heins, a retail analyst at Planet Retail.
"Casino's campaign has lost impetus in countries such as Dubai where there have been no further openings since a Géant store opened in the Ibn Battuta Mall in March 2005."
Local Middle Eastern retailers Emke Group and HyperPanda has also performed strongly in the region in the past year, and appeared in 12th place in the Top 30, after expanding its Lulu hypermarket concept in the UAE, Yemen, Oman and Kuwait.
Market entry into Saudi Arabia will be achieved this year, with plans for up to eight stores in the medium term, according to Planet Retail. KSA-based HyperPanda, in 13th place, is also becoming a major contender, with a target of 25 hypermarkets and 100 supermarkets in Saudi Arabia by 2010.
"Latest sales data for Africa and the Middle East continues to highlight the fragmented nature of the region's retail market. In 2006, the region's Top 30 grocery retailers accounted for just 29% of overall modern grocery sales in the region, compared with 59% in Western Europe," Heins said.
"The region's more lucrative markets, especially in the Gulf, is contributing to higher levels of concentration. Domestic and international retailers have established a growing presence in the Gulf due to high levels of spending, relative political and economic stability and a greater demand for modern shopping facilities and international products." Deira City Centre to open 24 outlets

Deira City Centre (DCC) yesterday announced its plans to open 24 new outlets by this September. A substantial fashion component of this expansion includes Splash, Boots, Shoe Mart, Mothercare, Pablosky, Wrangler and Bata.
The new stores will be part of the Dh350 million redevelopment programme that began last year to upgrade the centre's facilities with a view to improve the customer experience and retail mix at the centre. Dubai Municipality has signed over the responsibility for enforcing smoking restrictions in shopping malls to mall management, Gulf News reported. The commitment is dictated from the announcement of the Smoking Ban. Malls will be self-regulating, said DM Director-General Hussain Nasser Lootah. Malls will not introduce a total ban on smoking but are required to set up specially designated areas for smokers. No deadline has been set for compliance. Bahrain has banned smoking completely from its malls.

Dubai to Build `World's Biggest Mall' in Desert Strip

Dubai Holding LLC, a government-owned investment company, plans to develop what it says will be the world's biggest shopping mall, at a cost of 10 billion dirhams ($2.7 billion).

The project will be developed in Bawadi, a planned strip of more than 50 themed hotels in the desert of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The first phase of the mall will comprise 4 million square feet (376,000 square meters) of shop space, Dubai Holding's Tatweer unit said in an e-mailed statement today. That's equal to about 70 football fields.

Dubai, the second-largest of seven sheikhdoms that make up the U.A.E., will run out of oil and gas within 25 years, and is investing in tourism to diversify its economy. Tourism contributed 18 percent of Dubai's gross domestic product in 2006, according to the Department for Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

The project will be developed in partnership with Al Ghurair Investment, a closely held Dubai-based trading group with interests in real estate, retail development and manufacturing, the statement said.

The largest completed shopping mall in the world is the South China Mall in central Dongguan, north of Hong Kong, with about 7.1 million square feet of retail space, most of which has yet to be filled by tenants.

The Bawadi project is expected to cost as much as $54 billion to build and will include a series of themed hotels based on landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. The development will include the $5 billion ``Asia Asia'' hotel with 6,000 rooms. Source

BenQ opens exclusive outlet in Dubai

The 1,500 square feet store, in the heart of Dubai's commercial business district of Bur Dubai, will be home to BenQ's computing and consumer electronics product range including LCD monitors, LCD TVs, projectors and digital cameras and other digital lifestyle products.The Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa at BenQ said that the company is gaining a fair share of the Middle East market and is ranked second in the LCD monitor segment and third in the digital projectors for the region.

Sharaf opens country's biggest electronics retail store in Dubai

Sharaf DG, the consumer electronics trading company of Sharaf Group, said it has opened the country's biggest electronics retail store in Dubai and wants to open outlets in other Gulf countries.
The store on Shaikh Zayed Road has 100,000 square feet of retail space, group vice chairman Sharafuddin Sharaf said. He said the store houses goods worth Dh70 million and 300 brands are represented.
Sharaf DG is expanding to benefit from a regional retail boom supported by tourism growth.
It currently operates three electronics retail outlets in Dubai, two of which were launched this month.
"The consumer electronics market is going to grow in proportion to increase in tourism," Sharaf said, adding that he expects average 5,000 customers daily to its biggest store, located in the group's new Times Square shopping mall.
The Sharaf DG store also has an exclusive zone managed by female staff for women customers.
The company plans to open stores in other emirates and will have presence in at least three locations in the GCC within two years, Sharaf said.
Discussions are on to open an outlet in Bahrain.
Sharaf expects the local retail growth to sustain "big box" retail stores.
About 25,000 electronics items are being sold at the store. "We will ensure that any legally available product in the UAE is made available and delivered to our consumers," said Nilesh Khalkho, head of merchandising at Sharaf DG. Source

Dubai’s colossal Mall of the Emirates was named the ‘Retail Destination of the Year’ at last night’s World Retail Awards.The mall – which is home to more than 440 retail brands, not to mention an indoor ski slope and a five star hotel – beat off competition from Galeries Lafayette in France and Bluewater in the UK to clinch the award at last night’s first-ever World Retail Congress in Barcelona.The 6.5 million square foot mall - which is owned by Majid Al Futtaim - opened in September 2005 and features names such as Carrefour, Debenhams, Harvey Nichols and Borders. It is currently the largest shopping mall in the Middle East, although the Dubai Mall, which is under construction by Emaar, and Mall of Arabia will take the top spots upon completion in late 2008 or early 2009.

H&M opens fourth and fifth outlets in Dubai

Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), the Swedish-based international fashion retailer, has opened its fourth and fifth stores in Dubai in partnership with Kuwaiti retailer M.H. Alshaya Company.
The new stores at Deira City Centre occupy approximately 800 and 1,100 square metres of fashion. The retailer's fashion oriented collections are sold in the "young store", which includes the young lines for men and women. Meanwhile, the "family store" offers lines for women, young girls and children.
The company first entered the Middle East retail market in the second half of 2006 with two store openings in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates and a third in Ibn Battuta Mall.
According to an H&M statement, the company's 'M for Madonna' line of clothing and accessories is scheduled to arrive in all Dubai, Kuwait, and Qatar stores carrying the women's wear collection on Thursday.

Bendon first started making quality intimate apparel in 1947. That’s when Ray Hurley, a demobilised naval officer, joined forces with his brother Des – a pattern cutter by profession. The name Bendon was a literal description of how the product of the new company, Hurley Bendon, worked. The so anxiously awaited opening of Sephora in Dubai actually happen it four days ago, on the 1st of March, at the Festival Waterfront Centre.

Finally, the store it's here and all fans can enjoy it.

I personally visited the store today and precisely investigated the well stocked displays: Dior, Lancome, Clinique and all the rest of all the luxurious cosmetic brands. Here you can see more pictures from the Sephora's insides.

All those it's a well decorated and generously stocked cosmetic store with a world wide reputation, still can't compare with Paris Gallery.

Spinneys open 24/7

Spinneys supermarket has opened its Bur Dubai store 24-hours a day following repeated requests from customers, management have revealed. The Ramada branch is now open round the clock to allow all day and all night shopping. Management claims the experimental step was taken to cater for the huge demand in the area. “This store is in an area where we observed customer movement until early in the morning. We received requests from customers to keep it open 24 hours and decided to experiment with it,” said the Spinneys spokesperson. The group plans to monitor the results and make an assessment in a couple of months about continuing with the idea in other locations.

Marks & Spencer in Dubai Festival City

British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) opened the doors to its largest store outside the UK in Dubai Festival City (DFC) yesterday, following a Dh30 million investment.
The 64,000 square foot store is more than double the size of most existing outlets in the UAE and covers two floors of clothes, home furnishings and food, but falls short of the company's 100,000 square foot flagship store in Marble Arch, Oxford Street, London.
The opening brings the total number of M&S outlets to nine in the GCC and five in the UAE. Officials of Al Futtaim Group, the franchise holders for M&S in the GCC, recently told Gulf News that approximately Dh50 million will be poured into second stores openings in Kuwait and Qatar in the next two years.
An added Dubai store on the Jebel Ali side of the city is planned for a later date.

This high street newcomer may have an Italian name but it was created, and is owned, by the Spanish Inditex Group. Zara is the most famous child in this family, but each sibling has its own niche.
Massimo Dutti’s speciality is East Coast preppy — an Hispanic Ralph Lauren for those not yet possessed of a seven-figure salary. In Massimo Dutti’s marble-and-dark-wood interior you can't see anythink flashy.
The collections usually consist of jackets and trousers in cream, black and pale grey pinstripe. These are the kind of pieces that women in Madrid wear to the office, mostly with a pale blue shirt to avoid the white shirt, dark trousers Soy camarera look. There also rails with the modest yet becoming clothes that Madrid women wear at the weekend: suede jackets in caramel, full floral print skirts and shirt dresses — not cheap, but pricing is the way in which Massimo Dutti asserts itself within the Inditex hierachy.

Bin Hendi Avenue is the luxurious addition to Deira City Centre. It opened just a year ago and it houses only high-end boutiques: Hugo Boss, Versace (Link), Bracchiallini and many designer jewellery shops. I like mostly the calm atmosphere (so different than the City Centre) and the coffee shops. For some more views of the outlets click here (Link). At Bin Hendi Avenue on the ground floor is the furniture and accessories store Jawed Home. It is housing Flamant and White Company.
Flamant offers very elegant range of furniture which are quite pricey, but bearable after discount. To view few pictures, please click here (Link). The White Company offers mostly bedroom accessories in white – bead sheets, towels, pajamas, robes etc. I personally find it a bit expensive for what it is as there are better options for less from other furniture and accessories stores.

The Mall of the Emirates

It is the largest and the newest Mall in Dubai until today. No one knows what will rise tomorrow.
Mall of the Emirates is conveniently located on Sheikh Zayed Road, at the Dubai new developments area, on a cross road between Al Barsha, Um Sequim, Al Quos Industrial Area. If you drive from the Marina or The Emirates Hills towards the city it will be on your right hand side and if you travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi it will be on your left hand site. As this is a new aria developed in the last few years, naturally majority of customers are Expats for m Europe, Australia or America.
The variety of coffee shops, eateries, stores, shops, boutiques is the largest in Dubai.
The high-end boutiques consist of Luis Vuyton, Roberto Cavalli, De Beers, Escada, Etoale, Gucci, Armani, Salvatore Feragamo, La Perla, Versache, Massimo Dutti, Hugo Boss, L'Occitane (Link) plus all the rest. There are some very well stocked furniture stores as Home Centre, Marina, Zara Home. The range of retails outlets is endless: Zara, Mango, Forever 21, Levis, Splash, Top Shop, Bereshka, Stradivarius, Pepe Jins, Debenhams etc.
Of course the most visited is the hypermarket Carrefour.
There are two food courts apart from other restaurants as Chillis, Japengo, and Noodles House. The coffee shops are too many for any one to remember, but I like am most Paul, Cinabon, Starbuck, Coffee Bean and Tea Life, Le Pain Quotidien (Link). There are plenty of jeweler shops, book stores, nutrition shops and in general every kind of store one may need. For more details, please click here.
Tip: If possible, avoid going there on Fridays as it is overcrowded and you won’t enjoy it. My favorite shopping time is Sunday morning.

Damas Kids, Jewellery Boutique

An interesting boutique for kids is one of the many Damas Jewellery shops. It's located on the second floor, near the antiques shops. Until than I have seen in many jewellery shops bracelets and chains with kids motives and design - Micky Mouse, Ladybirds etc , but never a shop specializing in it. It offers only kids jewellery and watches. For the Arab women juwellery is very important asset and many have quite rich collections. One of the first major shopping malls in Dubai, which is located in Bur Dubai . Actually is the second build by Al Gurair Group after the Al Gurair Centre. Bur Juman comprises of 300 thousand sq. ft. of retail space with 190 stores of popular American and European brands, wide selection of restaurants, a food court and cafes.The Children area is quite popular. It's on the third floor and id called Tobby. It is very convenient as you can leave the kids for two hours and round the shops by your own.

Two years ago a new extension was completed, which is housing hi-end boutiques and stores: Saks Fifth Avenue, Salvatore Feragamo, Hermes, Laundry by Shelly Seagal, Tiffany etc.
Other popular retail outlets are DKNY, Calvin Klein, Cartier, Rodeo Drive, Polo Ralph Lauren, Escada, Rivoli, Aigner, MaxMara, NEXT, Mango, Zara, Paris Gallery (Link) and Guess.

Souq Medinat Jumeirah

The Souq Medinat Jumeirah is very conveniently located between few five star hotels targeting mainly tourists - Mina Al Salam, Al Qaser, Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel. There are around 300 small shops, mini stores, boutiques and kiosks offering every think from branded cosmetic to authentic Iranian carpets, Kashmir pashmina shawls and antiques.
The Souq Medinat Jumeirah is most popular with the restaurants and coffee shops : Trader Vik's, The Left Bank, Noodles House etc. The view from the terrace tables is spectacular. There are water channels between the different parts of the complex which are serviced by old Arabic bots ( abra). We enjoy very much the food at Japengo.

Deira City Centre in Dubai is the most visited Mall. It is located very conveniently in the older part of the city on cross road between Sharja, Bur Dubai and the Airport. It is one of Majid Al Futtaim's Group mall chains and was the first to open and until now, is the most popular. It is a popular shopping, entertainment and leisure complex with 2 levels. It has over 1.2 million sq. ft. of retail selling space, with over 300 shops and 6,000 free car-parking spaces. Similar to all of the City Center chains, Deira City Center houses the popular hypermarket Carrefour (previously known as Continent). It also houses an 11-screen Cinestar Cinemas , Bin Hendi Avenue, 11-storey office tower, Magic Planet (leisure family complex), and the Sofitel City Centre Hotel and Residence.
Popular Retail Outlets are Debenhams, Plug-ins, Woolworths, Paris Gallery, and Virgin Megastore, Zara, Massimo Dutti . Majority of shops and stores are offering middle range of products.

Deira City Center is a daily routine casual shopping experience: need something - stop at the Mall. The Carrefour is the most visited. All those is not welcomed in the Middle East you can see women in short skirts or guys in shorts, slippers become common. Supermarket trolleys are allowed up to the parking under. The shopping mall portion of the Wafi City complex is regarded as one of the most elegant shopping complexes in Dubai, having distinct pyramid-shaped atrium roofs. It was opened in 2001 and has over 200 stores, 60 international brand retail outlets, restaurants, and two floors of covered parking. It houses a popular family entertainment center, Encounter Zone, features a roller-blading rink, virtual reality simulators, a 3D motion theatre, and crystal maze. It also has The Link, which links the mall to the Pyramids complex, and is the useful venue for various exhibitions and fashion shows.
